The best DIY bubble solution recipe that actually works
Most homemade batches disappoint because of one fixable mistake. Here's the recipe, the science behind it, and how to troubleshoot when things go wrong.
Why most homemade recipes fail
There are hundreds of bubble solution recipes online. Most of them produce mediocre bubbles, and it comes down to three problems: wrong ratios, the wrong dish soap, and not letting the solution rest before use. None of these are hard to fix once you know what to look for.
The other major variable is weather — which you cannot control but can plan around. A batch that performs brilliantly on a cool, humid morning may disappoint on a hot, dry afternoon. Understanding why that happens helps you set realistic expectations and schedule wisely.
The recipe
This ratio has been widely used by bubble enthusiasts for years and produces reliably large, long-lasting bubbles with standard household ingredients:
How to mix: Pour the water into a wide container first. Add the glycerin and stir gently with a spoon until combined. Then add the dish soap last, and stir again — slowly, in one direction, for about 30 seconds. Do not whisk. Do not shake. Do not use a hand mixer. Any of those actions introduce foam, and foam in the solution weakens the bubble film. If a foam layer forms on the surface, skim it off and discard it — do not stir it back in.

Why each ingredient does what it does
- Dish soap is the surfactant — it creates the elastic film that forms the bubble. Products with added conditioners, moisturizers, or antibacterial agents tend to weaken the film. Plain, unfragranced versions of Dawn Original or Fairy Original are consistently reliable.
- Glycerin is a humectant — it attracts and holds moisture, which slows the evaporation that causes bubbles to pop. It also increases the thickness and elasticity of the soap film, allowing bubbles to stretch larger without breaking.
- Water quality matters more than most guides mention. Hard water contains dissolved calcium and magnesium ions that interfere with the surfactant molecules in dish soap, weakening the film. Distilled water has no dissolved minerals — if you're in a hard-water area and your bubbles are consistently short-lived, switching to distilled water is the single biggest improvement you can make.
Budget alternative: corn syrup instead of glycerin
Light corn syrup (or golden syrup in the UK) works as a substitute for glycerin. It's cheaper and available at any supermarket. Use the same amount — ½ cup per 6 cups of water. The trade-off: corn syrup produces slightly thicker, heavier bubbles that travel lower to the ground and pop a little sooner than glycerin-based solution. For young children who want to catch and pop bubbles up close, this is fine. For giant wand bubbles or long-floating photo opportunities, glycerin is worth the small extra cost.
Scaling for giant wand bubbles
Giant wands (the kind made from two sticks with a loop of rope or yarn) don't need a different recipe — they need the same solution in a wider, shallow container so the wand can dip cleanly. A roasting pan or long baking tray works well. For very large bubbles, some people increase the glycerin slightly — up to ¾ cup per 6 cups of water — for extra elasticity.
Weather and conditions
- Humidity above 60% is the sweet spot for bubbles. The air itself slows evaporation from the bubble wall, so bubbles float longer and travel farther.
- Heat and low humidity cause bubbles to pop within seconds of forming. Shade, and timing activities for late afternoon, helps.
- Wind carries bubbles beautifully for photos but also pops them faster. A light breeze is fine; a gusty day is frustrating for young children who want to catch rather than chase.
- Direct sunlight dries the film quickly. Where possible, orient bubble activities so children face away from the sun or are in partial shade.

Storing leftover solution
Bubble solution keeps well. Pour leftovers into a sealed container — a mason jar, a plastic bottle with a lid, or the original dish soap bottle rinsed out. Store it in a cool place out of direct sunlight. It will last 1–2 weeks without any meaningful quality loss. If a skin forms on the surface after storage, skim it off before use. Do not store solution in a metal container — the minerals in metal can interact with the soap film chemistry over time.
A note on safety
Dawn and Fairy dish soaps are non-toxic and safe around children. A small amount on the lips or skin is not harmful — though it tastes unpleasant and children will say so clearly. Plain water rinses it off immediately. For any child under three, keep wands and solution containers out of reach between uses; the solution itself is not a concern, but the containers and wand sticks are. Bubble solution on grass is fine. On hard surfaces — concrete, decking, tile — it becomes slippery. Either lay down towels or keep children in soft-soled shoes when the solution has splashed onto hard ground.
